MBABANE – Belgium and the Netherlands have joined forces to support the inaugural Mr and Miss Albinism Africa pageant, set to dazzle audiences on June 23 in Zimbabwe.

This exciting announcement emerged from a statement shared on social media by the pageant’s organisers. “We extend our heartfelt thanks to the broadcasters from Belgium and the Netherlands for championing the Mr and Miss Albinism Africa and Diversity Festival.

Their immense reach can reshape public perceptions and elevate the voices of individuals with albinism, shining a spotlight on the pressing issues they face,” the statement declares.

The impetus for this pageant was born out of the necessity to highlight the unique challenges encountered by those with albinism across the African continent. The official launch took place on January 27 at the Harare Club Hotel, where the excitement in the air was palpable.

Tapestry

Unveiling 31 contestants representing 18 different countries, the competition showcases a tapestry of cultural diversity. Notable participants hail from Botswana, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Lesotho and Nigeria among others.

Eswatini’s inclusion in this iconic event is particularly poignant, with Nkosinamandla Makhanya and Lusanda Mazibuko chosen to represent the nation.

Their participation marks a significant stride towards fostering an inclusive society that acknowledges and embraces the experiences of individuals with albinism. This representation is a powerful reminder that visibility matters; giving a platform to unique stories amplifies awareness and paves the way for change.

In South Africa, the Mr and Miss Albinism South Africa pageant stands out as another inspiring initiative tailored specifically for contestants with albinism.

Designed to empower, raise awareness and advocate for these individuals, the event has already garnered attention in 2023 with 18 contestants taking part, further cementing the movement’s momentum.
