DRAMA AT CK MODELLING AGENCY FASHION SHOW
MANZINI – The CK Modelling Agency launched on Saturday almost hit a wrong curve when Maswane’s designs were passed off as boutique stock.
The fashion show saw local designers shine with their innovative designs.
However, the show was almost spoilt when local clothing shop EMC Designs allegedly showcased some outfits that were originally designed by Maswane Dlamini without her knowledge.
Maswane, who is a well known designer and currently the official designer for Miss Swaziland Samukelisiwe Magagula was infuriated when she discovered that more than five of her prom night dresses were to be showcased without her being consulted.
The designer noticed her creations backstage during the fashion show and enquired from the models where they had received the garments.
Enquired
“The models told me they were showcasing for EMC Designs and that is when I enquired from the owner of the boutique Sandile Shongwe as to why my designs were being showcased under his label,” said Maswane.
Sandile Shongwe confessed to the error of not consulting with Maswane prior to the fashion show.
“I own EMC Boutique and I usually ask designers like Chanx and Maswane to design clothes for the boutique and there is nothing new there,” he said.
Maswane, however, disagreed saying, “He has only ever approached me once to design two outfits for his clients which I did and we parted ways.”
According to Maswane the dresses that were at the show are prom dresses she had designed for St Michaels pupils in 2013.
She alleged that when she enquired from some of the models, who are former St Michael’s High School pupils, they confessed that Shongwe had seen the designs in the local newspaper and approached the students and requested to purchase the dresses.
However, the chaos was averted as Maswane was credited by the host during the EMC showing. “I just felt that it was wrong for my designs to be showcased at a public gallery without my knowledge. As a designer I work very hard so I must protect my brand name always. I shudder to think what would have happened had I not been there to see the designs on the models before they went on stage,” she said.
Maswane, however, added that all she wanted was for people to do things right, especially boutique owners.
She said it was necessary for them to always give credit to designers especially in public fashion shows as they too take their work seriously.
