MBABANE – The Swazi Plaza was brought to a standstill as 100 enthusiastic dancers thrilled unassuming shoppers through a flash mob.

The event, which took place on Saturday morning, was organised by Alliance Francaise du Swaziland. It started at exactly 11am for a duration of five minutes.

Surprisingly

The act was so spontaneous in that it surprisingly started with one dancer pretending to be on the phone and suddenly the groups entered the arena and the music started playing. Thereafter, it was a great moment of dance.
The flash mob, traditionally a spectacle designed to be a surprise outbreak of dancing in public setting, was organised to officially begin ‘La Francophonie’.

This is a weeklong celebration of the French Language and Francophonie culture, which the alliance is hosting in the country over the weekend.
Numerous dancers and performers including Pelepele, Waterford Kamhlaba High School, St Francis High School and Limkokwing University entered the square at the Swazi Plaza much to the confusion of passersby. They then broke out to a brilliantly choreographed dance to Francophonie music which elated the crowd.

Interesting

“This is just the beginning of a programme of interesting and exciting events which will be taking place this week,” said Emily Motu, Director of the Alliance Francaise in Swaziland.
Moto said they were hoping to see more members of the public during the events as it will be free of charge.
“The weeklong celebration will come to a close with a spectacular Street Festival along Dzeliwe Street,” she said.

Pelepele Director Larry Mhlanga was part of the organising team for the flash mob and he felt it was a success.
“I think we pulled it of successfully although we had to delay for about 30 minutes. It was nice to see how it left the people yearning for more, which was the primary objective,” he said.

On Saturday, during the Street Festival, Qibho and Sandz alongside the Della Tamin will perform at the Theatre Club. The Puppets of Mozambique, who thrilled last year during the Bushfire Festival, will also be added to the line-up after having a workshop with Pelepele.
