OLYMPIC GAMES: ‘SWAZI BOLT’ OLDEST IN 100M
MBABANE – Eswatini fastest man Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa is reportedly the oldest athlete in his 100m event.
The 36-year-old Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) runner, Matsenjwa, will showcase his sprinting skills today. This is when the official start list will be confirmed as well. Meanwhile, the youngest sprinter is Puripol Boonson of Thailand, who is 18 years old. The official Paris Olympic Games website confirmed these reports. It was earlier revealed that today’s race is a do or die for ‘Swazi Bolt’, as he will lace up his spikes for the last time at the world’s biggest stage. Eswatini backs Matsenjwa to showcase a better performance, after local swimmers Hayley Hoy and Chadd Ning were unlucky in their debut of this competition. He is set to compete this coming weekend with Paris as a witness in the ongoing competition set to end on August 11.
Borrowed
The short distance runner made his debut at the World Athletics Championship in borrowed spikes and uniting a nation during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Affectionately known as the ‘Swazi Bolt’, Matsenjwa has earned a reputation for unleashing his fastest times at the Olympics. He has lowered the national mark in the 200m at all three editions of the global showpiece. He also holds national records in the 100m and 400m.
Matsenjwa has emerged as Eswatini track and field’s standard bearer on the global stage, representing the country at three Olympic Games in London 2012, Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.
Matsenjwa said age factor did not really contribute in one’s performance. He had been quizzed with regards to whether his age factor would boost chances of a better performance.
“Focus and determination are key if one wants to perform well. Age can only motivate other athletes to join the sport,” he said.
