The All Africa Games
The Athletics Association of Swaziland can only afford to send only one athlete to the All Africa games.
This is because they do not have the funds to send the 12 athletes they had anticipated would take part in the games.
It is no secret that their government subvention is too little when compared to what is given to football. When you look at the level of performance from some athletes you wonder why this is the case because the other fields tend to do much better than football in the international arena.
We need a strong sports minister who will ensure that all the sporting disciplines get what is due to them.
Sporting codes like angling, judo, athletics, taekwondo and boxing need to be given more than they receive at the moment because their performance over the last year has been outstanding and they have lifted the country’s flag high.
In other countries, sporting codes that perform well are rewarded for their hard work and this is seen with the individuals being given money and other such incentives.
South Africa for instance has a policy in place that ensures that outstanding performers are remunerated accordingly. The country needs to start recognising sports as a possible profession and put measures in place that will see sportsmen and women participate fully in international competitions instead of warming the benches.
Only 45 women MPs nominated
There are only 45 women in the 336 chiefdoms nominated for the position of Member of Parliament. This figure is a pure reflection of where the country as a whole stands in as far as gender equality and gender imbalances are concerned.
We live in the 21st century and such should not be happening. As a country we should not be decrying such statistics as though we are still living in the medieval age.
This reflects how skewed equality is in our society. This shows where women stand and how they are regarded in this society.
Although it is said that women are the backbone of the home and by extension the country, the election polls have not reflected this assertion. This is truly a sad reflection of the country and where its priorities lie.
Women clearly do not enjoy the same opportunities with men and they will be relegated to the kitchen.
Women are seemingly still not empowered enough to trust in their abilities hence their inability to vote for each other. This is disappointing to say the least.
How are women expected to enjoy equal opportunities with men if they are not adequately represented in the forums that enact laws intended for their wellbeing?
Women still lag behind in businesses; very few hold senior positions in government and in the private sector and it all boils down to them not being confident enough in their abilities and not being given enough opportunities to prove themselves.
Women’s empowerment is vital to sustainable development and the realisation of human rights for all.
