Times Of Swaziland: CERTIFICATION SCHEME STEP TOWARDS EMPOWERING MSMES CERTIFICATION SCHEME STEP TOWARDS EMPOWERING MSMES ================================================================================ Nhlanganiso Mkhonta on 15/11/2024 08:22:00 EZULWINI - UNDP Resident Representative Henrik Franklin mentioned that the Ingelo Local Certification Scheme presents a significant step towards empowering MSMEs, which are vital to the economic fabric of Eswatini. Franklin said although MSMEs face these significant challenges, it is encouraging to note that the Government of Eswatini is addressing these barriers in collaboration with development partners, including UNDP. By establishing a clear standard for safety and quality, we can help MSMEs gain the confidence of retailers and consumers alike. Markets The Ingelo Local Certification Scheme will align local standards with international best practices, making it easier for our MSMEs to initially compete locally, while they gain experience to eventually expand to regional markets and beyond. Currently, it is relatively expensive to get a quality certificate for a new start-up. However, through Ingelo, the certification process will be simplified, while maintaining high-quality standards, hence reducing the time to get certified and the associated costs. Through UNDP support, the Ingelo Certification Scheme is now being piloted among 20 promising MSMEs paving the way for a full rollout. Currently, over E300 000 has been allocated as an investment to assist the first 20 MSMEs with their certification process. These funds will cover the high costs of product testing given that we typically use accredited laboratories located outside the country.
