MBABANE - Radio legends reunited for a nostalgic comeback on the airwaves.
Veteran radio legends including the Member of Parliament Marwick Khumalo,
S’gayoyo Magongo, Makhosi Khoza, Percy Simelane, Yellow Rose, Rodgers Mamba,
Senzo Malaza, and Baby B Mndzebele made a return to the airwaves yesterday to
celebrate Radio Day at Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS). A
radio day is a day that is celebrated on the February 13 because it is the day
of the establishment of the United Nations Radio.A familiar voice to kick-start
the day was Enock Qedusizi Ndlovu, who interviewed Bishop JV Mazibuko on the
morning news show called ‘Letishisako’.
His interview with football administrator Frederick Mngomezulu was the one most
people liked on social media, since the broadcast was live on the station’s
Facebook page. “Where we are as a nation, or what we are doing to make sure
that we qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)?” he asked. Lomasontfo
Dlamini, an EBIS 1 radio listener, shared her excitement about the return of the
legends: “Those of us who grew up listening to these veterans were taken back
into golden times, and we felt young again. When listening to these modern
broadcasters, I fail to find any broadcaster that would come close to the
standards these legends have set.
Another familiar voice that returned to the station is renowned politician MP
Marwick Khumalo, nicknamed ‘Days and Weeks’, prides himself on being the
initiator of listeners calling in the station. He mostly played R&B music that
combines elements of Pop, Blues and Jazz with a strong backbeat. Khumalo shared
his excitement to be part of the special programme, as famous former Moneni
Pirates legend Sydney Masango was one of the callers who called yesterday. They
were able to share tributes to the old days together. Another familiar voice,
mostly loved by soccer lovers, S’gayoyo Magongo, was one of the listeners’
favourites as he took them down memory lane.
On EBIS 2, Makhosi Khoza entertained his listeners with his set of songs. He
started working for the radio in 1992. Khoza has worked for many big stations in
South Africa, including Radio 702, Radio 2000, East Coast Radio and Gagasi FM,
to mention a few. Then in 2019, Khoza hung up his headphones to pursue other
avenues within the radio space. King’s Office Spokesperson Percy Simelane and
Rodgers Mamba also entertained the listeners with their broadcasting skills;
old-time stories, especially a certain story that happened in Nhlangano, where a
listener gave them E200 to braai some meat, then one of them took the other E100
for himself as he cited problems back at home.
