MBABANE – The recently released statistics by the Eswatini Tourism Authority
have shed light on the remarkable success of the MTN Bushfire Festival 2024.
With a significant increase in international arrivals and overnight stays, this
popular annual event has not only solidified its status as a must-attend
festival, but has also provided a much-needed economic boost for the Kingdom of
Eswatini.
*International arrivals surge: The report reveals that the number of
international arrivals for the MTN Bushfire Festival in 2024 reached an
impressive 22 880, marking a staggering 50 per cent increase compared to the
previous year. This surge in attendance reflects the festival’s growing
popularity among tourists from all corners of the globe. *Top 10 Inbound
Arrivals: South Africa emerged as the top source of international arrivals,
accounting for an overwhelming 75 per cent of the total. This is indicative of
the festival’s strong appeal to neighbouring countries, with Mozambique
following closely behind at 11.3 per cent. Other countries that contributed
significantly to the festival’s success include Zimbabwe, the USA, Lesotho,
France, Portugal, Botswana, the United Kingdom and Germany. *Economic
implications: The MTN Bushfire Festival’s growing international reputation and
increased attendance have significant economic implications for Eswatini. The
influx of tourists results in a surge in spending, benefitting numerous sectors
of the economy. *Tourism revenue: With a larger number of international
visitors, the tourism industry in Eswatini is set to experience a considerable
boost. Increased spending on accommodation, dining, transportation and local
attractions will directly contribute to the country’s revenue. *Job
creation: The influx of tourists not only stimulates the tourism sector but also
creates employment opportunities. Hotels, restaurants, transportation services
and local vendors all require additional staff to meet the demands of the
festival attendees, thereby reducing unemployment rates and providing a positive
economic impact. *Local businesses: The MTN Bushfire Festival presents an
excellent opportunity for local businesses to showcase their products and
services. Craft vendors, food stalls and artisans benefitted from the
festival’s diverse audience, resulting in increased revenue and exposure.
*Cultural exchange: The festival’s international appeal encourages cultural
exchange between Eswatini and its visitors. This exchange fosters a deeper
understanding of Eswatini’s rich heritage, traditions and art forms,
ultimately promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation.
*Sustainable growth: While the surge in international arrivals and overnight
stays is undoubtedly a positive sign for the Eswatini economy, it is essential
to ensure that this growth is sustainable. The festival organisers and the
Eswatini Tourism Authority must continue to invest in infrastructure, marketing
and community development to maintain the festival’s appeal and attract a
diverse range of attendees in the future.
