The prestigious event is dedicated to celebrating the most outstanding innovators, influencers and boundary-pushers. This gala not only paid homage to remarkable achievements across various sectors, but also showcased the profound impact these trailblazers have on the cultural landscape of South Africa. Among the standout moments of the evening was the presentation of two Lifetime Achievement Awards, notably awarded to distinguished figures Wilson B Nkosi and Omar Badsha. Industry Nkosi, a legendary voice on South African radio has entertained and informed the public for decades, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Nkosi’s career is a testament to resilience and creativity. Rising from humble beginnings in Eswatini, his journey to becoming a revered figure in South African media serves as an inspiration to many. Over the years he has cultivated a deep connection with his audience, using his platform to address social issues, promote local talent and share stories that resonate with listeners from all walks of life. In an interview with the radio legend, he said the GQ Lifetime Achievement Award is a testament to his work in the industry.” The award is in recognition of my body of work as a ‘social broadcaster’. My work as a broadcaster seeks to satisfy the following deliverables, namely: Entertaining, educating, informing, empowering and inspiring. This award means I achieved what I sought to achieve and that is to address pressing matters pertaining to the human condition,” he said. Nkhosi went on to say that the GQ Lifetime Achievement Award is far more than an award. ” It is an anointing by the people who say, We see you. We hear you. Your messages of hope do not fall on deaf ears. It means the people have accepted me, have embraced me and for that, I am eternally grateful, very thankful and most humbled. I am pleased to be heard and seen. The universe in whose hands my destiny lies continues to smile upon me.
