MBABANE – Jo Anke, an exciting new contemporary art gallery in Johannesburg
has invited six Yebo artists to exhibit at their opening exhibition.
Jo Anke specialises in portraits and expressionist art to emerging and
established art collectors. The gallery offers 3 exhibition spaces namely the
gallery, the office and the modern home to mid-career and established artists.
The Director Hlengiwe Vilakati said “Our vision is to promote and facilitate
cross cultural understanding between people and form of languages. I believe
that interactions and collaborations shared through cultural exchanges can be a
powerful and fruitful experience.”
Their first show, ‘NONE BUT ALL OF US’, opens on Tuesday, September 24 and
will feature South African artists and a selective few from Yebo Gallery,
Swaziland. It is Jo Anke’s vision to nurture collaboration within the creative
and arts industries.
Participating artists draw from a pool of subjects and blend those into a common
theme of communication.
The Swazi artists participating are Khulekani Msweli, Aleta Armstrong, Mbongeni
Fakudze, Ray Berman, Peter Armstrong and Thabo Lukhele. Among the South African
artists participating in the show will be model and painter, Bukhosi Nyathi,
Thulani Zondo, whose main subject is cancer using steel and wood; Vusi Mpufi ,
Cyan Khoury, and Anneke Carter.
Jo Anke is owned and managed by Hlengiwe Vilakati. Hlengiwe is a former
Marketing Executive.
Her core professional competence lies in marketing and advertising strategy
development and implementation, brand account management and driving creative
concept development. She’s been professionally involved in the arts,
part-time, since 2009 under the auspice of the Johannesburg Art Fair.
Hlengiwe has visited Yebo Art gallery a few times and her and the Yebo Director,
Aleta Armstrong have made an agreement to collaborate in the fine arts in an
innovative way.
“It is a great opportunity for local artists to now exhibit in Johannesburg
and work with another gallery as well. Hlengiwe is so passionate about her work
and we are very pleased to work with her” said Yebo Contemporary Art’s
Director Aleta Armstrong.
