On October 4, 2024, the Eswatini National Commission for UNESCO and various
partners will host a Walk for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the
Lubombo Biosphere Reserve, where the starting point will be at Maphophomeni,
Tikhuba. This event aims to foster lasting collaborations and spark meaningful
discussions on innovative solutions to drive Eswatini’s development forward.
With only around 15 per cent of the SDG targets globally on track, this walk is
more than just a physical activity, it’s a powerful call to action for all of
us to play our part in achieving the 17 SDGs.
What is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve?
A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is a designated area that promotes a balanced
relationship between humans and nature, combining conservation with sustainable
use. These reserves are recognised for their unique biodiversity, cultural
significance and the innovative ways in which local communities manage and use
natural resources. They serve as living laboratories where solutions for
sustainable development are tested and demonstrated. The Lubombo Biosphere
Reserve, where the SDG Walk will take place, is one of these unique spaces.
Eswatini’s journey to securing the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve’s UNESCO status
is a remarkable story of dedication, collaboration and a deep commitment to
sustainability. The designation of the Lubombo Biosphere in 2020 marked a
significant milestone for Eswatini, as it became part of a global network of
sites that foster harmonious interactions between people and nature. This
accomplishment was achieved through the joint efforts of government, local
communities and international partners to preserve the area’s rich
biodiversity while promoting sustainable development practices. Today, the
Lubombo Biosphere Reserve stands as a testament to Eswatini’s commitment to
the global goals of biodiversity conservation, climate resilience and
sustainable resource management.
Why Walk for the SDGs?
The SDG Walk is a powerful way to increase public knowledge and understanding of
the 17 SDGs and their importance for global prosperity, peace and
sustainability. By participating, you will be contributing to the collective
effort to achieve these goals and demonstrating your commitment to a better
future for all. The walk will feature several objectives: It aims to increase
public knowledge and understanding of the 17 SDGs and their significance,
encourage community involvement by bringing together individuals, schools,
businesses and local organisations and serve as a platform to advocate for
policy changes and government commitment toward achieving the SDGs. Participants
will have access to educational materials about the specific targets and
indicators of each SDG. Donations collected during the walk will support
projects and programmes working towards meeting the SDG targets. The event also
aims to foster partnerships between different sectors of society to work
collaboratively on SDG-related projects, and the route will showcase local
biodiversity, highlighting environmental SDGs. The walk will also involve
schools and youth organisations to emphasise the role of young people in shaping
a sustainable future.
The SDG Walk promises to be an engaging event for all ages, providing
opportunities to learn about ongoing SDG initiatives in Eswatini. There is also
an exciting social media competition underway. To participate, you will need to
choose one SDG and create a one-minute video showcasing a youth-led project in
your community that focuses on the chosen goal. Follow the UNESCO Eswatini
National Commission on all social media pages, post the video and tag UNESCO and
five friends on Facebook and Instagram. The winner will be announced at the
walk, standing a chance to win E1 000 and many more prizes.
Why the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve?
Choosing the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve as the venue for this year’s SDG Walk
is no coincidence. The Reserve is a great example of how Eswatini is working
towards its SDGs, particularly in the areas of biodiversity conservation (SDG
15: Life on Land), climate action (SDG 13: Climate Action) and sustainable
communities (SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities). It provides a perfect
backdrop for a walk dedicated to fostering awareness, education and action
towards these goals. The reserve’s unique status as a UNESCO biosphere
underscores the global importance of local conservation efforts.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, participants are advised to wear
comfortable footwear, bring a hat and maintain a collaborative spirit.
High-clearance vehicles are recommended due to the terrain of the Biosphere
Reserve. The event is free, but registration is required. The registration link
can be found on UNESCOs social media pages.
As the world prepares for the Summit of the Future, it is vital for all of us to
engage in actions that drive us closer to the achievement of the SDGs. The SDG
Walk at the Lubombo Biosphere Reserve is a significant opportunity for
individuals, organisations and communities to come together in support of
sustainable development. Together, we can make a difference and let’s walk the
talk for a better tomorrow!
