Sir,
I would like to express my concerns regarding the current situation in Eswatini,
whereby emaSwati are showing disrespect for their cultural norms through the
water party regiment. The water party regiment (Bemanti) is a significant
cultural event in Eswatini that indicates the commencement of the Incwala
Ceremony. This traditional ceremony, commissioned by His Majesty King Mswati
III, holds great importance in the cultural fabric of the nation. The water
party, comprising selected individuals, embarks on a journey to various
destinations prior to the commencement of the first leg of the Incwala ceremony.
Aspects
One of the key aspects of this event is the visitation of homesteads by the
water party regiment. Contrary to any perception of imposition or abuse, these
visits are deeply rooted in Eswatini culture and serve as a reminder for
emaSwati about the traditional values and practices that define their identity.
It is essential for individuals encountering the regiment to understand and
comply with the cultural norms that are expected of them during these
encounters. The process of kuhlamahlama, where the water party makes random
visits to homesteads, serves as an opportunity for the community to uphold and
honour their cultural heritage. Certain customs, such as women covering their
hair and refraining from wearing trousers, as well as men avoiding shorts and
hats, are observed as signs of respect towards the culture and their Majesties.
Respect
In the event of a breach of cultural norms, individuals are expected to show
respect and make a symbolic offering, even if it is in the form of a cloth tied
to a stick, to acknowledge their mistake and seek forgiveness. This practice
emphasises the importance of upholding traditions and demonstrating deep respect
for the cultural heritage of Eswatini. It is imperative for emaSwati to fulfil
their responsibilities and obligations during this period and to refrain from
engaging in any conflicts or disrespectful behaviour towards the Water party
regiment. Any form of disrespect towards the regiment is akin to disrespecting
the King himself, as they act on His Majesty’s behalf during this cultural
ceremony.
Preserving and honouring the cultural traditions of Eswatini is a collective
responsibility that transcends generations. By upholding and cherishing these
customs, we not only safeguard our heritage, but also ensure that the rich
cultural legacy of Eswatini endures for future generations to cherish and
celebrate. Let us revere our culture and traditions, safeguarding them against
external influences, to continue the legacy of our ancestors and enrich the
cultural tapestry of our nation.
