Times Of Swaziland: MAINTAIN PEACE AND RESPECT AT WORKPLACES MAINTAIN PEACE AND RESPECT AT WORKPLACES ================================================================================ Editor on 21/02/2025 08:42:00 Sir, In any society, the preservation of peace and mutual respect is paramount for the proper functioning of both the nation and its people. A peaceful country allows for the smooth running of daily affairs, where individuals can coexist harmoniously, trust is built and everyone can carry out their duties without fear of disruption or disrespect. Whether in our personal lives or in the workplace, fostering an environment of peace and respect is essential to the well-being of all citizens. However, as much as we strive for peace, there will always be individuals who seek to undermine it. One such example has recently been witnessed on the Facebook platform, where members of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) National Executive Committee showed blatant disrespect towards the police. Incident The incident occurred when SNAT members visited the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) offices to seek an audience regarding SNAT President Mbongwa Dlamini’s salary. Unfortunately, their actions did not reflect the respect that should have been afforded to both the office of the TSC and law enforcement. The SNAT members arrived without an appointment, creating unnecessary noise and disturbance in the TSC offices. Disrespect This was the first display of disrespect, as it is common courtesy to schedule a meeting before showing up. The situation escalated when the police were called in to maintain order and ensure that the disturbance was stopped. Instead of complying with the authorities, the SNAT members continued to shout insults at the police, undermining their role and the importance of their profession. This behaviour is deeply concerning and should be condemned. The police, who are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining peace and upholding the law, deserve to be treated with the utmost respect at all times. Their job is not easy, and they are often placed in difficult situations, trying to maintain order and protect the public. Disrespecting them, particularly in the manner witnessed during this incident, only weakens the fabric of our society and sends the wrong message to our children and future generations. What message are we sending to young people if they see adults, especially those in positions of power, defying lawful orders and disrespecting the police? Should they be taught that disrespecting law enforcement is acceptable? Absolutely not. It is our duty to lead by example and instill in them the values of respect, cooperation and peaceful resolution of conflicts. In any country, peace and respect should be prioritised above all. No matter the grievances one may have, it is never acceptable to resort to violence, disrespect or disruption. We must encourage peaceful dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation to address issues rather than exacerbating them with confrontation and disrespect. Furthermore, in our workplaces, mutual respect for one another is vital. Whether we agree or disagree on various matters, maintaining a level of professionalism and courtesy towards colleagues and superiors fosters a healthy, productive environment. This extends beyond just our interactions with law enforcement and government bodies. It applies to how we treat our co-workers, bosses and all members of society. In conclusion, while challenges may arise, the importance of keeping peace and respecting one another cannot be overstated. We must all work together to ensure that our country remains a peaceful place where the rule of law is respected, and everyone is treated with dignity. We must respect the police and their duties, for they play a crucial role in maintaining order. Ayanda Mkhonta
