EZULWINI – Madams are not a fairytale in the local sex business. According to
Wikipedia, a madam is a woman who manages a brothel, escort service or some
other form of sex work for profit.
The existence of such women was made known by a sex worker whose name has been
deliberately withheld. The sex worker said madams could be found at Pigg’s
Peak and were usually older women in the trade who recruited younger girls.
The recruits were said to be often teenagers as young as 15 years old. She did
not overrule the possibility of the recruits being younger as they hid their
ages from the other girls. “Some of the young girls are recruited by their
friends and at times relatives,” she revealed.
The sex worker was concerned that the ‘cub’ ladies of the night were in more
danger than the seasoned ones. She said they were easily manipulated into
agreeing to any demands made by clients.
According to the sex workers, the young recruits were often easily exposed to
rape, HIV and STIs. She said they then spread the infections to other clients
who in turn spread it to their lovers.
The sex worker revealed that they had boyfriends like ordinary women but were
not aware of the nature of work they did. She revealed that their clients
included both married and unmarried men.
She added that they did not only work at night but also during the day,
depending on what the client wanted. She stated that their clients were aware
that they had partners and knew when to call them. Sex workers at Pigg’s Peak
seem to be making a killing as they charge about E300 per session during the
dagga season and between E150 and E200 off season.
The sex worker revealed that they make as much as E1 800 per night during busy
nights. She stated that they did not work in street corners as stereotypically
known but worked in bars. Foreign nationals were said to be top customers who
paid handsomely for the services of the ladies of the night.
