US EMBASSY: WORLD HAS LOST  POWERFUL HUMAN RIGHTS VOICE

MANZINI – The USA Embassy says Eswatini and the world have lost a powerful
voice for nonviolence and human rights.
This is contained in a statement which was issued by the United States of
America (USA) Embassy yesterday, following the death of Human Right Lawyer
Thulani Maseko. The embassy said they learnt with profound sadness about the
tragic death of Maseko, who was a renowned human rights lawyer,
Multi-Stakeholder Forum Chairman and champion of social justice.
It said Maseko was an alumnus of the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, where he
studied at American University - Washington College of Law in 2010-2011 and
focused on the US Bill of Rights and mechanisms used by the US Supreme Court to
interpret and uphold fundamental human rights and freedoms. Thereafter, it
extended its deepest condolences to Maseko’s family, friends and admirers
around the world.
Meanwhile, the Swaziland Massacre Victims and Survivors Association (SWAVISA)
Chairman Madzabudzabu Kunene said they learnt with shock about the brutal
killing of the renowned human rights lawyer and activist. He said Maseko was a
visionary leader, who dedicated his life to the people of Eswatini and fought
side-by-side with them.
Struggle
He said Maseko courageously led from the front in the people’s struggle
against the Tinkhundla regime. Thereafter, he said as SWAVISA, they called upon
the people of Eswatini not to despair, but mobilise. He said they would remember
Maseko as a selfless revolutionary who fought for basic human rights and respect
for the rule of law in our country. He said they also called for an immediate
and independent inquest into the killing of Maseko.
