MBABANE - With Christmas just around the corner, consumers are facing a chilling
prospect: A potential power shortage that could leave holiday meals defrosting
and decorations unlit.
The Eswatini Electricity Company (EEC) issued a warning this week, urging the
public to conserve electricity or risk a darkened festive season. The dry spell
has significantly impacted the company’s hydropower generation capabilities.
Compared to November 2023, power generation in November 2024 dropped a
staggering 29 per cent. This means less water flowing through hydroelectric
plants, translating to less electricity for the nation.
To avoid a holiday blackout, the EEC is pleading with residents to become
‘electricity ninjas’. The message is clear, conserve power, especially
during peak hours. This means turning off unnecessary lights, unplugging unused
appliances and avoiding running power-hungry devices like washing machines and
ovens at the same time. Think twice before cranking up the air conditioner or
leaving the TV on standby. Every little bit counts in reducing the strain on the
national grid. By working together, Eswatini can ensure a brighter (and cooler)
Christmas for everyone.
