Times Of Swaziland: RAINS: 35 HOUSES DAMAGED, 172 PEOPLE AFFECTED RAINS: 35 HOUSES DAMAGED, 172 PEOPLE AFFECTED ================================================================================ Sibusiso Zwane on 08/01/2025 09:43:00 Manzini – At least 35 households, impacting 172 people and seven critical infrastructure sites, were severely affected by the torrential rains that began on Monday. The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) Communications Manager, Magman Mahlalela, confirmed that the heavy rainfall across the country has led to widespread flooding. Mahlalela stated that the preliminary rapid assessment identified Hhohho and Shiselweni regions as the most affected areas. Over 35 households suffered damage, displacing more than 172 people. Many of these homes, constructed with basic materials like stick and mud, sustained significant damage, resulting in the loss of essential household items, including furniture, kitchenware and clothing. “Flooding has caused rivers to overflow, damaging roads and washing away bridges, severely disrupting the movement of people and hindering emergency assistance,” Mahlalela said. The Eswatini Meteorological Services has warned of continued scattered to widespread rain showers and thunderstorms. The NDMA is urging the public to exercise extreme caution and has given the following tips: *Avoid crossing flooded rivers: Neither by car nor on foot. *Drive with caution: Reduce speed, use headlights and maintain a safe following distance. *Protect vulnerable structures: Dig trenches around stick and mud houses to redirect water. *Remove water pumps: Those located near rivers are at risk of being washed away. *Remain vigilant: Households downstream of dams should be aware of potential increased water levels due to dam releases.
