Like most working women, Nomcebo Mngometulu misused her financial independence. There is nothing more fulfilling than self-sustainability in life but that advantage turned into a foe for her as she turned to eat more than her body required. Through constant binge eating and lack of exercise, she gained weight. Narrating her story, she said that in early 2015, her body weight was 101kg and at the time, she was suffering from low blood pressure, her weight compromised her health condition, deprived her physical mobility and took its toll on her self-esteem. “I ate anything that could fill the stomach. I thought I was spoiling myself with my hard-earned money and before I knew it, my body was a baggage too heavy to carry. I had to make a choice to live happily and healthily,” she said. She stopped turning to carbs for comfort and worked out daily to peel off an incredible 15kg. She currently weighs 86kg, with a target weight of 70kg. It is worth understanding that weight gain is not an overnight thing and likewise, losing it will also take time. You may want to lose weight, but if you are not self-disciplined in terms of training and monitoring your food options, you can gain it back. Psychologists always say, ‘doing one and the same thing and expecting different results is absolute madness’. If you want to change your life, you need to change your habits and work towards your goal. In a bid to shed the extra weight, she joined Tubungu runners together with Manzini Striders athletes during morning and afternoon road runs in 2016 and since then, she has become more physically toned, healthier and happy in her own skin. Apart from running and doing aerobics, she took up banting and the results thereafter were incredible. clean Banting is about clean eating (low carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet named after William Banting – the first person to do it) and not a diet but a lifestyle. She commended her coach’s dedication and patience to make her the best she can be. She said coach Mangena Simelane introduced her to cross-fit training and her fitness level has improved remarkably. “What I was doing before was unfair to my body. I was my own enemy but I know better now. 2016 was my turning point and I am not going down that path ever again. I enjoy being active and healthy. Since I started working out, my hypertension dilemma is a thing of the past,” added Mngomezulu. Exercise and diet are more like marriage and if you cheat on it, believe me you, it will not work. Start off by cleaning your fridge and replacing your food with healthy options. Working out can be done indoors but it is a proven fact that a gym or training club can provide the ideal support system to keep one going. Tip of the day: “You are what you eat. If you do not take time to take care of your health now, you will definitely have to make time for feeling sick and tired later”.
