This is a sport many people in Eswatini are not familiar with. However, the Eswatini National Badminton Association will this year partner with local schools to revive the sport. The local badminton association has not been active in the past few years but the local association is determined to see the sport grow this year. Initiatives The plan is to have the sport played by pupils at schools as one of the association’s initiatives to introduce it at grassroots level. Eswatini Badminton President Penuel Gwebu shared their goals of 2020 when contacted yesterday though details were a bit scanty as he highlighted that he was held up in meetings. “We do want to revive the sport in 2020; we are planning on introducing it at schools as that is the perfect platform to inculcate badminton at grassroots level and promote more activity,” said Gwebu briefly. The president added that they were keen to grow the number of schools that played the sport and have sourced from Badminton Confederation Africa, equipment in the form of nets, shuttles and rackets. Distribute “These will be distributed to schools currently playing but have shortage of equipment and also will distribute to new schools. We are also exploring distribution to colleges and universities playing the sport,” he said. Gwebu added that the donation was received towards the end of last year and consisted of around 100 rackets, nets and shuttles. Some of these, he said, were already shipped to schools like Ntfonjeni, Mhlatane and Waterford.
