The weekly parkrun hosted at the Mbabene Club attracted over 100 runners yesterday. The wellness event is open to people of all ages, taking part in a 5km walk or run, commencing at Albert Millin to Eveni and back to the starting point. Most athletes use the wellness event as part of their training routine for upcoming races, while others join to keep fit and healthy. The event began with a celebration for Alex Duga’s 50th parkrun. champion Yesterday’s champion was Swazi Slojos’ athlete Mduduzi Dlamini. He was followed by Njabulo Masilela. The finish times could not be immediately ascertained as organisers had not compiled and released the results by 5pm yesterday. They are usually released between 11am and 1pm. Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) athlete Nongcebo Mathabela, on the other hand, was the lady champion. The lady athlete said she was preparing for the upcoming Epilepsy 21km race billed for next Saturday at Sikhuphe in Siteki. St Francis High School’s form II student Lethokuhle Metiso was the first junior runner to cross the finish line. It was her second parkrun and 14-year-old Fikile Dlamini from Sifundzani High School was the next lady to reach the winning point. Veteran park runner, Doctor Ignace Bigilimana, who has had over 100 park runs returned to take to the trails. every weekend “I’m 63 years old and I’m here every weekend. Parkrun helps me to stay fit and healthy. My finishing time has improved compared to when I started but now it is stagnant on 29 or 30 minutes. I would advise people to exercise regularly to promote health and fitness,” said Bigilimana. Siyamthanda Dlamini, a 10-year-old parkrunner, could not miss yesterday’s parkrun. The young runner is always in the company of his grandmother who drives him to Mbabane Club for the run. “This is my 13th parkrun. I would like to thank my grandmother for bringing me here to train. I am a sprinter in my school’s athletics team where I do 400 metres as well as 100 metres and 50km,” said the junior athlete. NB: Results in next edition.
