MBABANE – Death be not proud.
The first ever assembled national team Sihlangu Semnikati and ex-Mbabane
Highlanders goalkeeper Timer Mthembu has died. The sad news of the former soccer
legend was disclosed by his son Veli Mthembu, who mentioned how Mthembu died in
the morning of New Year’s Eve.

The soccer legend passed away while at his home around 9:30am and was taken to
Mbabane Government Hospital, where he was certified dead upon arrival.
According to the deceased’s son, Timer, who was reported to have lost both
legs following amputation in November 2010 resulting from gout-related
complications, died from a COVID-19 related illness.

“It is with a sad heart to announce the passing of our father Timer Mthembu.
He died on Thursday morning at home. The doctors certified him dead when we got
to hospital. He had not tested for COVID-19 but the doctors tested his corpse
and we were informed that he died from COVID-19-related complications,” said
Veli.
Mthembu’s funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course as the
family had scheduled a meeting for later today.
“We have not confirmed the date yet but we were planning to have the funeral
during the week, not on the weekend,” said Veli.
Eswatini Football Association’s (EFA) Communications Officer Muzi Radebe
extended sincere condolences to the Mthembu family, friends, and the football
family for the loss of Mthembu.
“Timer Mthembu is one of the greatest footballers of all time in the country.
He played for Mbabane Highlanders and the national team back in the days. Our
condolences go out to his family, friends, the entire football fraternity and
other establishments. May his soul rest in peace,” said Radebe.
