MBABANE – “We need players who can score goals.”
The above statement was made by Mbabane Highlanders South African-born gaffer
Selaotse ‘Sly’ Mosala after watching his charges beat Manzini Wanderers 1-0,
courtesy of Siwakhile Shongwe’s 63rd minute strike to win the 2022 Bible
Society Cup at the Mavuso Sports Centre on Saturday.
The black and white capital giants brushed aside Denver Sundowns in the second
semifinals on 6-5 penalties after a 2-all draw in regulation time, to set a date
in the finals with Manzini Wanderers, who beat city rivals Moneni Pirates 3-0 in
the first semifinals. “It’s worrying that we created a number of chances but
we failed to score, we can’t rely on one player to score for us. We need to
find players that will help us score goals,” Mosala said.
Faced
The former Free State Stars assistant coach said this was not just an issue for
Mbabane Highlanders only, but all the elite league teams were faced with this
challenge. “If we need to solve this we should go internationally for top
quality strikers,” he said. He also said the international practice matches
against the South African top sides in Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates
helped them a lot to win this cup. “We need to go back and have international
friendly matches against big sides in the continent, as playing in Africa is
tough,” he said.
Trailists
When asked about the trailists that were given a run during the Bible Society
Cup, the coach said for now he could not say anything as they would have to
meet with the Managing Director (MD) Chief Ally Kgomongwe. “We need players
that will add value in the team not just average players,” he said. He further
said a foreign player should be better than the locals, as they could not afford
to sign an international player to warm the bench.
