MBABANE – Luca Frazer did not only win seven gold medals in the Mpumalanga
Swimming Championships but broke three records in the boys 11-12 age group.
The championships were held in Nelspruit, South Africa (SA) over the past
weekend, where Swim Lab Swimming Club managed to scoop 11 gold, 10 silver and
four bronze medals totalling 25. The 12-year-old Luca was also presented with a
trophy to celebrate his excellence as the best performing visitor in the
competition that also featured swimmers from SA’s various provinces as well as
Mozambique.
Luca broke a 27-year-old 50 metre freestyle record previously held by C. Harmse
of 29.27 seconds with a new personal best (PB) of 28.99 seconds. He progressed
to set a new record of 36.10 seconds in the 50 metre backstroke, beating N. Du
Plessis’s 36.24 seconds record that had been unbeaten since the year 2000.
Achievement
Luca’s third achievement in the tightly contested championships was breaking
the 200 metres breaststroke record time held by C. Haulley in 2010 at 3.10.02
minutes, only for Luca to set the bar with a record finishing time of 3.02.07.
Swim Lab Coach Welcome Nhlabatsi, who led the team to Mpumalanga with the
support of Viva Water Company, congratulated the swimmer for the remarkable
achievement, highlighting that Luca had broken three records during the Eswatini
Swimming Association’s Age Group Gala held a fortnight ago at Enjabulweni
School.
“Well done to Luca. We are very proud of him and his achievements. He also
became the best visiting swimmer of the competition,” Nhlabatsi said. ESA
President Herman Jele also marvelled at the junior champion, who continues to
achieve greatness in his swimming journey at an early age.
