MBABANE – The Eswatini Angling Association (EAA) is gearing up for an exciting
weekend at Maguga Dam, as the National Championships are set to take place.
EAA President Derek Hopf has announced that the championships would be staged
between Saturday and Sunday. The event will be used to select the national team
anglers who will represent Eswatini in international events. In a statement,
President Hopf expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming event, citing that the
championships would produce the team that will represent the country at an
international level. “We are holding the last two days of the national
championships at Maguga Dam this weekend. Once we have the results of this
championship, we will be in a position to confirm the national team anglers who
will represent Eswatini,” said Hopf.

The previous edition of the Maguga Dam Bass Challenge showcased the remarkable
talent of young angler, 10-year-old Carter McKenzie, who made waves by securing
the largest catch of the competition, weighing in at an impressive 2.93kg.
Carter’s exceptional angling skills earned him a substantial prize of E15 000,
in addition to various tackle, sugar and other prizes generously provided by the
event’s sponsors. In the realm of competitive angling, Hopf currently leads
the Back-2-Back Fish Offs with an outstanding record of 210 top four finishes
and total log points. Meanwhile, Carter holds the 15th position out of 20
competitors, boasting 88 top four finishes and log points. Notably, Carter’s
father, Daryl McKenzie, solidifies the top three of the Back-2-Back Fish Offs
with an impressive 201 top four finishes and log points. As the stage is set for
the National Championships at Maguga Dam, the EAA and angling enthusiasts
eagerly anticipate a weekend filled with fierce competition, breathtaking
catches, and the emergence of the next national team anglers who will carry the
pride of Eswatini to international waters.
