Thwala competed in the TotalSports Two Oceans Ultra-Marathon held in Cape Town, South Africa (SA), this past Saturday. He secured position 490 out of over 1 000 runners in his category, having clocked 4:54.40 hours. He raced in the 56km event in less than five hours, earning a special medal styled Sainsbury. This was his ninth run in the race; he boasts of six Sub 5 medals and three bronze. Sub 5 simply means running the race under five hours. His personal best (PB) in the ultra-marathon is 04:44 hours, having started competing in the race. Reports suggested that over 30 000 runners had registered to compete in the celebrated event. The coach was elated to conquer this race. “One never knows with Cape Town, as the weather changes every now and then. However, I came prepared for the race mentally and spiritually. The route is challenging but no challenge is bigger than a well-trained athlete,” he said. The race is known as one of the most beautiful in the world, with the ultra-marathon following a route from Newlands to Muizenberg, St James, Kalk Bay, around Chapman’s Peak and into Constantia, before finishing in the shadow of Table Mountain at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
