Times Of Swaziland: THREAT FOR ESWATINI’S WORLD ESPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS SPOT THREAT FOR ESWATINI’S WORLD ESPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS SPOT ================================================================================ Sanele Jele on 17/09/2024 07:21:00 MBABANE – Eswatini’s Esports talent is ready to make waves, but they need to cross a few hurdles first. Local Esports Star Kroos Lukhele secured a place in the upcoming World Esports Championships to be held in Saudi Arabia in November. This achievement is not only a source of national pride, but also a significant financial opportunity for Lukhele, who is guaranteed to earn over E145 000 for his qualification. However, a recent change in regulations has cast a shadow over Eswatini’s participation. The Eswatini Esports Association (EEA) is now required to have an existing esports channel and maintain a broadcast of over 19 hours to ensure the country’s spot at the world championships. EEA Head of Esports Development Mbuso Dlamini has expressed concern about the challenges posed by these new requirements. Conditions “While we are doing everything in our power to meet the necessary conditions, it’s not a straightforward task. Achieving this requires a budget that was not initially planned for.”When asked about his feelings regarding the situation, Lukhele expressed a mix of calm and anxiety. “For now, I’m trying to stay calm about it,” he said. “But deep down, I’m nervous because I really want to go there and compete. A lot of resources have been invested in me to get ready for this opportunity.” Dlamini has appealed to local companies to come to the rescue, emphasising the need for E20 000 to ensure that all the necessary requirements are met. “We are urging local businesses to support our efforts and help us secure Eswatini’s place at the world championships,” Dlamini said. “Their contributions will not only benefit Kroos but also elevate the country’s esports scene.”
