MANZINI – The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) has issued an apology for
failing to observe a moment of silence before the Mbabane derby.
This follows the death of Mbabane Highlanders celebrated legend Bongani Innocent
‘Ten Ten’ Ginindza. Ginindza, who passed away on November 5, at the age of
56, was laid to rest this past weekend. Traditionally, the PLE honours deceased
stakeholders, including players and officials, with a moment of silence before
matches. However, this was not observed during the derby or other fixtures over
the weekend. Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Pat Vilakati expressed the
league’s regret on the Eswatini Broadcasting Information Services (EBIS)
Sports Show, early yesterday. He extended condolences to Ginindza’s family and
acknowledged the oversight.
Honouring
“As football personnel, one of our ways of honouring one of our own is by
having a moment of silence,” Vilakati stated, attributing the lapse to a
communication breakdown among officials responsible for the event. The PLE, on
the other hand, shared that the National First Division (NFD) fixtures will take
place during the upcoming international break from November 11-19. Vilakati
confirmed that the PLE will utilise this period to reschedule two NFD matches
disrupted by rain. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to enhance broadcasting
options for fans, ensuring that all emaSwati can enjoy the games while
supporting local businesses.
