Times Of Swaziland: ‘BUFFS’ GOALKEEPER ‘CHIPPA’ RETIRES ‘BUFFS’ GOALKEEPER ‘CHIPPA’ RETIRES ================================================================================ Machawe Mavuso on 12/01/2025 07:58:00 MBABANE – Former Young Buffaloes and Sihlangu first-choice goalkeeper Nhlanhla ‘Chippa’ Gwebu has officially retired from professional football. A source close to the army side revealed that the 39-year-old hung up his gloves four months ago, to concentrate on his military duties. “Chippa is no longer part of Young Buffaloes after requesting to give youngsters a chance between the sticks,” the source said. When contacted for confirmation, the former Moneni Pirates goal-custodian acknowledged his retirement. “It’s true, I have retired from football after requesting to call it a day to focus on my job,” Gwebu said. He disclosed that he officially retired in September last year upon returning from a course at Mbuluzi Army Barracks. Gwebu highlighted that the Amathole’zinyathi Management Committee (MC) gladly accepted his request, although they offered him a position within the club, which he declined. “The management wanted me to take up the goalkeeper coach position, but I told them that it would be like I am taking Baraba’s job in the team,” the former Green Mamba player said. Chippa offered advice to young players, emphasising that they must learn to appreciate and value every small achievement in life. “Until you learn to appreciate the small changes in your life, you will likely never change. Respect and appreciate every small amount of money, just as much as you would a large sum. Having a small amount of money is not a problem as long as you know you will not die with that small amount,” he said. Gwebu reminded budding footballers that football is a short career; today you are on top, tomorrow you may be nothing. “Every decision you make must be considered carefully, as it may have a significant impact on your future. While money is important, always think about the future,” he concluded. The Dominic Kunene-coached side’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sandile Gwebu confirmed that ‘Chippa’ is no longer with the team as he officially retired last year. “Chippa retired, but he will bounce back to help the team, as in football, a person is never lost,” the CEO said.
