MBABANE – Within six months, Swazi cellphone users could be carrying two
gadgets, each operated by different mobile networks.
This follows the January 31, 2017 deadline for the submission of comments to the
Swaziland Communications Commission (SCCOM) following its intention to award a
telecommunications service provider licence to Swazi Mobile Limited, which is
owned by local businessman Victor Gamedze.
The General Manager- Legal and Compliance of  SCCOM, Ozzie Thakatha, was on
national radio yesterday morning where he said they had received only three
submissions.
He said the submissions were from Swazi Mobile Limited, which has been
highlighted as the preferred applicant and SDNET, which was another company that
showed interest in being granted the licence and a certain unnamed individual.
The individual was merely applauding the demonopolisation of the
telecommunications industry which will allow new entrants into the sector and
give a choice to consumers.
During the programme Letishisako on SBIS 1, Thakatha said as SCCOM, they would
meet this week to go through the submissions which they hoped would be a speedy
process following the fact that those who had responded were very few.
He also said one of those who made a submission said they were happy that there
would be another mobile operator in the country. When asked when Swazi Mobile
would start operations, Thakatha said the former, in their application, had
mentioned that they would be able to be on the ground within six months of being
granted the licence.
