Times Of Swaziland: CABRINI PLAYS CRICKET CABRINI PLAYS CRICKET ================================================================================ By Multimedia on 26/08/2014 07:00:00 Cricket Mbabane has once again contributed immensely to the development of the game in the country by honouring an invitation to a faith based orphanage in the Lubombo region, Cabrini Ministries, at St Phillips. CABRINI MINISTRIES Cabrini Ministries has programmes of which one of them provides a comprehensive care for 82 children who live at the hostel during the school year and return to live with their guardians over the term breaks. They also provide educational support in the form of school fees, uniforms, books, health screening, to name a few for the 134 children who live in the community. Cabrini started holding camps during the term breaks four years ago to provide targeted life skills, psychosocial and sports based programming for both pre-teen and teenagers. PRE-TEEN CAMP Beth Kickert, the head of operation at Cabrini, invited Cricket Mbabane, courtesy of the Parking lot Cricket programme, for the sports day on August 21 to introduce the game to the children under the age of 13. Eight members of the team travelled to the lowveld ultimately to play and enjoy cricket with the children. In a formal set-up, the 45 children were taught how to play a match with the aid of videos. Delisa Malinga, the team coach and operations manager, headed the team and facilitated the proceedings. In teaching the game the children were taught life skills and the importance of sport in their lives and that it should be of priority to keep the body healthy as it denotes a healthy mind, so is the theme of the camp on the sports day, ‘Healthy body/ Healthy mind.’ MOTIVATION Paluku Muzamu, a Waterford student and member of the team, motivated the children on how cricket helped him attain confidence in life and was followed by Lindelwa Manana who shared directly to the girls how she loves sports and how it is related to education and mentioned careers in sports on the academics’ regard. Sibongiseni Dlamini, recently from Zambia with the under-19s team, also shared on his travels and making new friends and interacting in general. After lunch the campers were then taken to the field for a practical showing of the game and get everyone playing. Cricket Mbabane used the mini-cricket equipment in carrying out the most fun part of the initiative. Four groups were created and each group had two instructors for an hour and then later the groups namely, Kilos, Winners, Campers and Wild Cats locked horns in semi-finals, 3rd and 4th place play-offs and the final of which the Wild Cats won. Excitement was the order of the day. UPCOMING TEEN CAMP This was the Pre-teen Camp and the team will head down to St Phillips again on September 4, 2014 for the Teen Camp to do the same, celebrate their beloved game by sharing it with Cabrini. With the help of the Cricket Association the team donated mini-cricket equipment.
