YUKI: THE TRUE SWAZI FOOTBALL AMBASSADOR
Sir,
They call him ‘Yuki’. His name is Mcebo Dennis Masina, the veteran Swazi international who has been appointed captain of South Africa’s ABSA Premiership side, Mpumalanga Black Aces.
The dread-locked former Manzini Wanderers midfield-cum striker has proven to all and sundry that he is the true ambassador of Swazi football. And the fact that he has spent 16 years plying his trade in foreign land is a testimony that ‘Yuki’ is not your average player. History has it that Masina shot to fame in 1999, while doing duty for the then Francis ‘Mkhulu’ Banda-led Sihlangu seMnikati and his exploits never went unnoticed as he captured the eye of Mtata Bush Bucks, who lured him from Manzini Wanderers.
His footballing prowess ensured that the player established himself as one of the great Swazi players to ply his trade in the money-spinning ABSA Premiership, following in the footsteps of the likes of Abel ‘Chacklas’ Shongwe, Absalom ‘Scara’ Thindwa, and William ‘Cool-Cat’ Shongwe, all who left a mark while donning the gold and black colours of Kaizer Chiefs. In his illustrious career he played for other great sides in Orlando Pirates, Supersport United, while locally, he was groomed by Midas Mbabane City before joining the then formidable Manzini Wanderers.
And of course, it was not by miracle that the player had a stint in Holland where he also left a mark. What else can be said about the player who is not only the captain of the Nelspruit- based side but is one of the revered Swazi players in South Africa. Now that he has been honoured with the captaincy, it is within his responsibility to ensure that he leads by example and never set a foot wrong. It is a challenge for him to work hard so as to maintain his place in the team’s line-up and continue to hoist the country’s flag. We sincerely hope that the young talent will take a leaf from players of ‘Yuki’s calibre, who has demonstrated that with discipline and determination, there is nothing impossible.
