SHOULD CHRISTIANS EAT HALAL FOOD?
Sir,
Every year the debate over whether Christians should accept offerings of free food from the Muslim community flares up. What many Christians perhaps forget is that nearly every product available in supermarkets is halal. Even in supermarkets and food outlets which are owned by some so-called Christians, very little thought is given to people’s religious beliefs when supplies are ordered.
Instead, greed takes precedence and the pursuit of profit becomes the ultimate goal. The Bible is clear on the types of foods that are acceptable to be eaten by Christians (1 Corinthians 10:20). If Christians had to offer gifts of free food to Muslims, would they accept and eat it? If Muslims were offered kosher foods, would they accept and eat it or am I the only one sensing double standards here?
The migrant crisis currently affecting Europe is another example of these double standards. While millions of Muslim asylum seekers are flocking to the predominantly Christian countries of Europe, the only Muslim country so far to offer assistance to their fellow Muslims is Turkey. Rich Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait have failed to offer any assistance to their fellow Muslims fleeing their war torn countries, besides offering to build more mosques for the new arrivals, and yet they have the audacity to lambast Christians for not accepting their offer of halal meat because we apparently worship the same God! However, the God of heaven gave mankind 10 commandments. Please read the Quran (2: 191-193) and see what it says about people who are not Muslims.
If Muslims refuse to accept the fact that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Saviour, who died on the cross for our salvation, then I have to agree with the wise words of Bishop Simon Hlatjwako when he said Christians have no business eating halal foods.
