TREES ARE OUR HERITAGE
Sir,
It was with great sadness when I saw that the trees I had planted approximately 20 years ago on the 9th hole on the Manzini Golf Course had been cut down to make way for the new highway.Trees are our heritage and should be preserved and relocated wherever possible. So was the loss of the magnificent old Jacaranda Trees which were always such a beautiful sight when flowering.
With some planning and foresight many branches of the Fever Trees could have been planted on the golf course again.
If planted correctly they make instant trees. Also the four magnificent Fishtail palms. I am led to believe the contractors had planned to relocate these and plant some new trees as well. I would like to know if this will actually happen.
However, to add to the sadness of the loss of the trees on the 9th hole which was one of the prettiest and challenging holes in Swaziland, the palm trees were seen loaded on Thursday on a dark coloured bakkie. Unfortunately the person who saw them was unable to get the number plate or follow the vehicle.
Were these stolen; or just discarded? These Palm trees could easily have been replanted somewhere else on the golf course.
The Manzini Golf Course is the oldest in Swaziland and it is a course where many of our budding young golfers practice and test their skills. It is central, and relatively inexpensive to play there.
My dream is to see it fenced off and more indigenous trees planted to preserve this historical course and also to keep a wonderful green space in our growing city.I would be interested to know what the contractors have in mind to replace this 9th hole.
