THE NEED TO FIGHT MURDER AND RAPE

Sir,

Please kindly allow me space in your widely read publication to voice out my humble concern, regarding the high crime rate prevailing in our beautiful kingdom of late.

It seems that people have taken advantage of the state of affairs, killing anytime they want to. And to make things worse, most of the reasons they do it are childish, to put it mildly. You read about someone stabbing defenseless girls, and a father raping his own daughter all in one day’s newspaper.

Evidently, people no longer care what will happen should they be caught behaving in such inhuman ways. And the reason for that is that the court has become too lenient.
Yes, nobody has a right to take human life. Yet the very same perpetrators, sometimes have victims they have killed. More often than not, mercilessly. Maybe it was a mistake to abolish the hanging of such people.
Maybe it was not, that is not for me to say. Nevertheless, just because we are a supposedly godly nation does not mean we must sit back and watch these criminals wreak havoc all over the place.
Even in the Holy Bible, the wages of sin is death. But again, we are not supposed to kill, so we must leave that part to God. However, there is a better way.

No, it’s not sentencing someone to prison for life that would be cruel. All we have to do is to increase the number of years for that individual behind bars. This has got countless advantages; from the top of my head, there is ample time for the person to sit and ponder over what he has done. On the other hand, the victim’s family is more likely to get closure in this kind of sentencing.
There will be no desire to avenge their loved ones when the prisoner is finally set free, for they would have long healed, and forgiven. Human feelings put aside, this sentencing will allow those responsible for gathering evidence enough time to prove if the suspect has been wrongly charged. If he were to be hanged, such evidence would come to light a little too late sometimes.

Clearly, this is a win-win situation for all parties concerned. Above all, a person would have to think before jumping into committing a serious crime.
The soul of a person has been made so cheap, and people even boast about the number of killings they have made. This is just not right, and if the country is to reach first world status with a happy nation, it’s time to sacrifice and take hard decisions to better the life of the average Swazi.
If we do not protect our vulnerable country mates, who will?
