HISTORY AND RACE

Sir,

The widely accepted concept of race is a human invention meant to categorise people into different groups according to their skin colour, bodily features, hair type and even geographical location.

The very suggestion that there are various different races of humans could have contributed to the emergence of racist ideologies which lead some people to believe that some ‘races’ are ‘intellectually superior’ to others. Some so-called scientific researchers even went to the extent of conducting experiments on different groups of people in an attempt to prove that some ‘races’ were in fact ‘intellectually inferior’ and that even their brains differed in size as compared to those of their more ‘intellectually endowed’ counterparts.

History could have played a huge role towards creating these delusional racial ideologies. This includes ancient historical legends of which there are sometimes different versions from many different places. For instance, some historians are of the view that the founders of ancient Egypt were a mysterious aristocratic class of people called ‘Shemsu Hor’ or the ‘disciples of Horus’, who were said to be very different from the Egyptians of the time.

It is thought that the Shemsu Hor were very tall and very light in complexion such that they appeared to shine as if illuminated from within. They were also referred to as the ‘shining ones’ and were thought to have red or blond hair. Many actually believe that the ‘white race’ descended this ‘elite’ class of Egyptians who were themselves thought to be descendents of ‘Aryan god men’ who were said to have come from a manmade island civilization which vanished beneath the sea during a cataclysmic flood which took place in the distant past.

It is a known fact that much of nazi Germany’s racist ideology was based on the supposed ‘racial superiority’ of the so-called ‘Aryan race’. Many Irish historians are of the view that the origins of the Irish people can be traced back to the mythical ‘Tuatha De Danann’ of Irish folklore who were said to be a race of ‘Aryan gods’ who settled in Ireland after surviving a great deluge which destroyed their great island civilisation.

They are also of the view that the Shemsu Hor of ancient Egypt were in fact the same Tuatha De Danann from Ireland who also went to invade Northern India during the ‘Aryan invasions’ of Asia where they were said to have imposed the Vedic culture which happens to share many similarities with the Druid culture of the Celtic people of pre-Christian Europe such as the caste system and the use of the sun wheel symbol which gained fame as the swastika used by the Nazis.

Other historians, however, are of the view that the Celts of Europe were the descendents of the Scythians and Cimmerians of Asia who passed through or colonised Egypt during their migrations to Europe, bringing with them much of their cultural heritage including that of ancient Egypt such as bagpipes and the worship of Horus, the ‘sun god’ who, incidentally, was also known to the ancient Mayans of Central America as Quetzalcoatl the ‘feathered serpent’. Could these historical legends be the roots of racism?
