WHAT HAPPENED TO PRIORITISING?

Sir,

I have been watching with interest some of the decisions that our government takes especially when it comes to projects. Personally, I am one of those who believe that in order for a country to develop, there is a need to go for realistic projects and ones that would benefit the citizens.

I have seen tenders being issued for the construction of public roads but at times I wonder if this is done with a proper plan.
It becomes a problem when a road that is expected to benefit the people and the country as a whole, is suddenly halted with the reason given being that there is no money.

Why do you mean there is no money when other projects which we can do without are allowed? Government needs to be advised on such things so that projects are undertaken because there is a need and finances are there.

This brings me to the issue of prioritising, which I believe is a key element that should be considered by our government. It saddens me to say that I feel our government has forgotten the need and importance of prioritising. Why?

Think of the education sector, why did government introduce the Free Primary Education (FPE) without a proper plan on what would happen once the pupils have completed and passed Standard V? Right now most schools have said they do not have spaces in Form I and what this means is that government needs to find resources to build more secondary schools.  When they rushed to introduce the FPE programme did they consider that?

The fact that parents are now having sleepless nights as their children cannot get spaces in Form I shows that government has forgotten the need to make education a priority. This is an issue that should be rectified quickly, otherwise this country’s going nowhere and Vision 2022 will remain just a dream.
