WE NEED TO HONOUR WOMEN OF THE COUNTRY

Sir,

Allow me to pass my compliments to our neighbour, South Africa, for demonstrating that, indeed, women are an equally important group of the human species by recognising their strengths, abilities, sacrifices and the respect they have for other people.

South Africans took their time to celebrate Women’s Month  in August. Women’s Day’s commemorated every August 9 and is an officially recognised holiday in South Africa.
When I talk about a woman, I talk about a pillar of strength, a very kind person who sacrifices anything to protect and care for her children so that they can have a brighter future.

Women are so strong that they often conduct work seen as humiliating to most of our youth but they are doing things for their children. Some are street vendors, some work as domestic workers, some work in factories, earning peanuts, while some sell beverages at home earning little income. Many women go to bed on empty stomachs because they are paying for their children’s school fees. These efforts need to be properly celebrated by the nation.

Women are the foundation of the home. Most homes are standing strong because of the strength and sacrifices women make. Women have the ability to hold a family together and hide their pain with a smile on their faces. They can be broken, betrayed, abandoned and rejected yet they still walk proud, laugh loud, live without fear and love without doubts. But this should not be happening it should not be normalised. Women deserve far better than this.

It is very disappointing that our own country cannot even recognise the sacrifices and commitment women make for the nation to have a brighter future. For example, women should, by right, have access to land. We clearly see that women are strong enough to take care of a family with or without the presence of a man. It is sad the way culture has been used to oppress our mothers and sisters as well as children, especially the girl-child.

I appeal to the people of our country to truly honour women. There is no doubt that they deserve it. They deserve the respect of their dignity, a right they were born with, and also because of what they go through for everyone else to have a better future. We need to honour the contribution women have made for this country.
