PLANET DEMOCRACY
Sir,
My father once told me a story about a place called planet democracy. He said planet democracy was a wonderful place ruled by a persistent man called Freedom.
This was a man who always listened to people; he would grant ordinary citizens the room to express their ideas on how things were to be done. People were not deprived of their rights and all the citizens of this planet had equal rights and opportunities, no one was perceived to be superior to the other.
In planet democracy, there was no poverty because the government would provide for the people’s basic subsistence; the needs of the elderly were catered for. All the government ministries were working to their outmost best to harness and eradicate social stratification.
Workshops
The Ministry of Agriculture would provide farm inputs to farmers and also provided some workshops to equip the farmers on how to improve their yield. This played a fundamental role because there was no land that was lying idle at that time.
The availability of essential medicines was not a challenge in planet democracy.
All health facilities could provide quality health services. Patient affordability was also put into consideration thereby providing patients with cost-effective and affordable health services.
In the education sector a lot of good happened; the government provided free primary and secondary education and 90 per cent of the students were awarded scholarships to pursue their tertiary education.
However, an alien called Greediness came into planet democracy. This alien was a powerful creature and a smooth killer; it would collude with people during the day and send them six feet under during the night.
People abandoned Mr Freedom and followed Mr Greediness, thus everything changed and all the good in planet democracy disappeared.
Corruption
A nightmare occurred where corruption became a norm within the political arena. Politicians began to be self-centred, engaging themselves into politics-of-the-stomach. Within a short period, half of planet democracy citizens were living under absolute poverty, unemployment issues climaxed, revenue taxes increased and people were deprived of their rights.
Politicians would come to the people and tell them that the government was broke while on the other hand unnecessary budgetary allocations were made for some individuals’ personal aggrandizement. No one would treat this disease, the citizens ran back to Mr Freedom but unfortunately he was nowhere to be found.
