TO GOVERNMENT OF ESWATINI
Sir,
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my opinion in your widely respected newspaper.
Having arrived in this beautiful Kingdom of Eswatin in 1986, I have seen a lot positive actions being put to practice by the government for the benefit of its citizens.
I have seen the construction of new roads in many areas, new public buildings, news clinics, schools, new police stations, new schools and other projects.
However, I have noted with regret some of the hard recessions that government intends to take as a means of reviving the ailing economy.
Strategies
While I do understand the importance of coming up with strategies to help develop the economy, I am concerned about what was said regarding the proposal to hike taxes in the pay-as-you-earn (PAYE), electricity and fuel.
The reason I am concerned is because currently, life is expensive for most emaSwati as they are struggling to make ends meet since the little that they earn as salaries is not enough.
By hiking the taxes I feel like government is making it look like there are no other ways available that can be used to revive the economy, yet that is not true.
There is a lot that it can explore in order to improve the economy of the nation.
Dedicated
We are all dedicated to His Majesty King Mswati III’s Vision 2022 but government should not introduce policies that will hit hard on our pockets when we are already suffering.
My advice to government is that copying is good, as long as it is done for a good course.
I therefore advise that government should look at how other countries revived their economies and worked their way into achieving First World status.
The Eswatini Government can use the Dubai system where there is a tax-free nation and this will encourage investors into this beautiful nation.
We have for years been regarded as the Switzerland of Africa and we can make this a reality if we make the environment conducive for investors to come and open businesses.
These businesses will not only make the country grow economically but there will be employment opportunities for the hundreds of citizens who are sitting at home with no jobs.
Adopting
By adopting this system, more investors will be encouraged to come and invest in different industries such as mining industries, banks, construction and renewable energy etc.
The Kingdom of Eswatini has all the requisite to become the most attractive nation in the region especially because it is famously known as the land of peace and stability and has a God-fearing nation.
