ESWATINI NOT SO POOR

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

Just when I was starting to allow myself to fall for the good old statement, ‘Eswatini government is broke’ (and note how I said ‘allow’) then boom! I get the slap of my life and it hurts; it is mind-boggling; it is deeply astounding. Our country has US$6 million to donate yet some of our government hospitals will, after attending to you, prescribe medication for you to get from a pharmacy due to the ‘fact’ that ‘our government does not have enough money to purchase medication’.

Believe

And I swear I frankly was starting to allow myself to believe we are nothing but a broke developing country and there is basically nothing some of us can do about it at the moment but try to accept that. But now my mind cannot stop playing the question, “Are we really broke or we are broke when we have to provide for our citizens’ needs?” The basic needs, mind you.
Just a couple of weeks ago, students around the country joined as one protesting about money-related issues. We have been having PSA protests; our hospitals lack medication; our elderly are not receiving enough grants; yet . . . we have millions to donate to the Global Fund. And those are not just a few millions – I’m talking E91 million! A whole E91 million! Does charity not begin at home anymore?

Deduct

Would it have hurt to deduct E10 million and reserve it for scholarships? Would it have hurt to deduct yet another E10 million and reserve it for medication in public-sector hospitals and clinics? What about the salary-increment for PSAs? What about the thousands of emaSwati who live way below the poverty line? Would it have hurt to start some programme that would have helped employ several thousand citizens? Prices keep sky-rocketing; so do taxes – and the ordinary liSwati keeps feeling the pinch of being at the bottom of the hierarchy of owning a means of production. Clearly, our country is not as poor as we thought it was . . . no, it is not – no, it is not.

: 8% EEC Tariff Hike Cut
Does 8% cut have the potential to ease financial burdens for emaSwati?
