A MESSED UP NATION

Sir,

I am among many civil servants in the country who are worried by the lavish spending by our broke government.
Is the copious spending government’s feedback to teachers and other civil servants who have been demanding their well-deserved cost-of-living adjustment (CoLA)? Or is this the way government is telling its people that it is not here to serve stupid demands.

This showed that government is not considerate of the plight of the people.  We have witnessed the closure of universities and colleges in the country due to the delayed payment of students allowances. This has resulted in many taking to the streets protesting against government. Some of this students were left with bruises caused by rubber bullets while others were arrested.

Where do they get the money for their meetings in expensive hotels and for hiring foreign registered cars? If the country is really broke, why don’t we see a government that is doing all it can to save money, and put the needs of the populace first? I do believe that if government can afford such spending, it can also afford to give civil servants their CoLA.

It can also afford to provide more scholarship funds for every liSwati child who wishes to pursue his/her career in any field of his/her choice. Students’ allowances would not be reduced and would be paid on time, so they can enjoy their tertiary experience without any disturbances. And there would be no need to hire qualified teachers on a contract basis but give them permanent posts.
Moreover, the combination of declining revenues (as suggested by government) co

ntradicts the increased spending and has lead to a stagnant development in infrastructure, especially roads in the country. Road conditions in the country are extremely disappointing.

For commuters, they go through a hassle as they prepare for a tiresome journey to their areas of interest. They put themselves as well as their hard earned assets in danger.
The country needs a government that serves the needs of its people. We need a government that will have an open ear and mind to listen to our grievances, and respond in mutual benefiting ways.

As things stand in the country, it is extremely convincing that vision 2022 will be attained by a few people.
The rich will become more rich as the poor will become poorer. People in rural areas will drown and die in poverty while those in townships enjoy a luxurious lifestyle. As a nation, we are very disappointed in government because of the way it continues to make reckless decisions. We love our country and we can’t bear to watch it go down a dark deep hole. People are running out of patience.
