MABANE – The Swaziland Sugar Association (SSA) has donated a sum of E100 000 towards charity.

Charity organisations who have been selected this year include the Federation of the Disabled Persons in Swaziland (FODSWA), Lighthouse, New Hope Centre and Salvation Army. Presenting the cheques to the various organisations, SSA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mike Matsebula said despite the tough economic climate which the company was facing, it was decided that a contribution be made to assist the organisations. Matsebula commended all the organisations, stating that they were performing highly valuable services for the community. He said as a company they were very happy to see the dedication and passion which the organisations have shown when serving their communities.

According to Matsebula it was fully recognised that the needs of the charity sector for assistance exceed the available resources which SSA can devote to such worthy causes.

"As a consequence, we are forced to select only a few to assist. Even in the case of the selected few, their needs cannot be fully satisfied through the SSA assistance," explained Matsebula. He said the donations to charity were part of a much bigger social responsibility programme. He noted that other elements of the bigger programme were donations to rural primary schools, sponsorships to national athletics and sponsorship to junior tennis. Each organisation received a sum of E25 000 each.

Lighthouse Assistant Executive Director Helen Ward conveyed her appreciation on behalf of her organisation for the continued support from SSA. She said the money will go towards a good cause and has arrived at a much convenient time whereby they have embarked on a project aimed at addressing teen challenges. She said the money will be used to improve the Life skills Training Centre which was based at the Hawane farm.
