LOCKED DOWN, NOT LOCKED OUT

Sir,

Like always, I look forward to worshipping the Lord together with fellow believers every Saturday. So last Sabbath I took my Bible and left for church. Upon arrival at church I realised that there were only two cars at the parking lot, no usher to welcome congregants; indeed it was a different Sabbath. We were less than 20 and seated more than a metre apart. Under normal circumstances we always make it a point that we have potluck together as a congregation and spend the whole Sabbath at church but last Sabbath we had to leave soon after the main service. The COVID-19 pandemic has truly changed the way Christians live their faith.

Effect

The lasting effect of the pandemic on faith communities remains to be seen. Will people flock back to their synagogues when finally allowed, joyful at being able to be together again?
Or will habits be broken and connections lost as people discover other ways to pray and nourish their spiritual lives outside of the church? These are indeed unfamiliar days for us, and we are learning how to adapt to our new ‘normal’. Sometimes we decide to change but sometimes change comes upon us from elsewhere. While we might not have chosen to be in the situation we are currently in, we can choose to make the most of this lockdown. Let me suggest that during these unsettling times, we now have ample time to deepen our walk with the Lord.

Time

We now have adequate time to spend in studying the Word of God. The same words that God said to Joshua also apply to us today. The Lord is saying, “Keep the Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful,” Joshua 1: 8. Let’s use this time to create our own private spiritual retreat. To meditate upon the word of the Lord, to sing and pray. This is a great opportunity to go inward, spend quality time with our Lord. Having quality time with the Lord is of benefit to our health. We know that spiritual practices such as prayer, meditation and singing boost our immune system.We can pray in a myriad of ways. We can pray individually or we can pray as a family.
