GRADUATE DOCTORS

Sir,

It is with a heavy heart that I write this to you. I am one of the parents of the many graduated doctors that have been at home for more than eight months to almost a year now. We as parents have done everything in our power to sacrifice it all, so that we can enable our children to stand on their own two feet.

Some of us paid their six years of training without any support from government.

Debts

We have had to incur so many debts, struggles and hardships to see our children’s dreams coming to fruition.

However, government has made it its primary mission to combat all these efforts. They deny our children the opportunities to do internships so that they can be registered doctors and practice anywhere as they wish.

Approved

The internship programme is only supervised and approved by government. There is no other way they can obtain their licence without having done this. Therefore, they find themselves in an impasse.

They cannot carry on with their lives or even work anywhere else because this is forbidden by the government.

As parents, we find ourselves in very difficult situations because we initially thought with such a skill, which is highly demanded in other countries we would have been able to pay some of the debts by now.

I cannot even begin to describe the pain of seeing my child sinking into depression right in front of my eyes.

Anytime they go to meet with the ministry, their efforts are rendered futile.

I ask myself as a parent, where this country is going to?, even if education is not enough to improve the standard of living for our children, what about the future generations?.

May they please give our children the certificates so that they can go and offer their skills where they will be needed.

We have heard on different news outlets that out there in the world doctors are highly needed particularly in these trying times of COVID-19. This is seemingly the only country I know to date that disregards health professionals.

Devastated parent.
