FROM SECURITY GUARD TO TIMES SUNDAY COLUMNIST

Sir,

The phrase ‘Do not judge a book by its cover’ is a reminder to not make assumptions based on appearances. In this letter I aim to inspire those who may feel ashamed of accepting job offers that they believe are beneath their status. In 2017, after my previous company relocated to South Africa, I found myself in a desperate situation and took a job as a security guard with one of the oldest security companies in Eswatini. Initially, I was embarrassed to wear the company’s uniform, which prominently displayed the logo.

Challenges

Life’s challenges can be difficult to face, but I persevered and reminded myself that people are often quick to judge without offering help. Despite having more education than my superiors, I never disrespected them, even when they mistreated me. When readers discovered that the Alex Nxumalo who writes for the Eswatini Times SUNDAY was also a security guard, some were skeptical. However, many gained respect for me and found motivation in my story.

Grateful

Although being a security guard has its challenges, such as being falsely accused of a crime, I believe that every job has its pros and cons. I am grateful for the opportunity to inspire others through my writing, which I consider my calling. I retired on medical grounds in 2021. Life teaches one to be a hustler. I do not have a regular job, but life goes on. Avoid expecting to be offered help if you are not making any efforts to change your situation around. My advice is to not be ashamed of your status in life. You never know what opportunities or lessons may come from accepting a job that others may look down upon. Unemployment is prevalent in our country and sometimes beggars cannot be choosers. In the end, some of us may receive our rewards on this earth, while others may receive theirs in the next. That is why I continue inspiring people through my articles in spite of the numerous hurdles I have to overcome. Regardless, it is important to fulfill your life’s purpose and not let others’ opinions hold you back.
