LET US LOVE GOD TO LOVE OTHERS
Sir,
In his article Jon Bloom wrote, “The most loving thing we can do for others is to love God more than we love them. For if we love God most, we will love others best.” As I was mulling over these words, I began to realise that what Jon said was absolutely correct.
Love
If God is love, that means He is the source of love. Any relationship that is not plugged into God’s indispensable love cannot stand the test of time. You cannot disassociate yourself from the giver of love and expect to love others truly. The love tips and advices offered by romantic movies, novels, and love coaches are shallow and narrow compared to what God teaches us about love. With time, all this external advices will ebb (fade), but God’s kind of love will never fail.In His Word, God portrayed the paradigm on how we must love each other, hence we must follow His footsteps. God being the pioneer of love, it was not in His will for us to love others according to what is right (or pleasing) in our own eyes. God is delighted to see us paying heed to His precepts and guidelines for loving others. You cannot give what you don’t have, that’s why God loved us first.
Empowered
He loved us first so that we can be empowered by His love to love others. On our own, we cannot love adequately, our strength is bound to reach its rupture point, so we need God’s spirit to pour love in our hearts. Faith is the conduit by which we receive God’s love. Faith begets love, and love begets the extension of God’s nature (love) towards the whole of earth. In other words; if we continue to remain in God’s love, we will reach a point where His love in us touches other lives.
Learn
Once you are established and rooted in His love, you will begin to learn the dimensions (length, breadth and depth) of God’s love and eventually, you will develop the meekness to love the unlovable and to forgive the unforgivable. God in His providence, has our best interests at heart, therefore love others according to God’s benchmark, lean not on your own understanding. Remember; the most loving thing we can do for others is to love God more than we love them. For if we love God most, we will love others best. We love because He first loved us – 1 John 4:19 (NIV).
