HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO FIX ID PRINTER?

Madam,

One cannot read headlines like ‘Blow for those seeking IDs, passports’ without feeling a sense of Déjà vu.

Exactly how long does it take fix a printer or ID printing system? It is disturbing that Home Affairs should frequently suspend the issuance of ID cards due to a breakdown of the ID printer system. When tax is deducted like clockwork from workers’ salaries on a monthly basis, it is only fair that government systems should be efficient, so as not to inconvenience taxpayers for unreasonable periods of time.

At worst, poor service delivery could promote illegal immigration, fraudulent production of passports and tempt some of the Home Affairs officials to perpetrate the ill-fated side hustle.
Government must have a whole department or ministry responsible for computers and technology and the laissez-faire attitude in resolving disruptions is not acceptable. These days, one can do almost nothing without producing an ID and without a passport and one could miss lifetime opportunities, business and money, just because they are grounded by disruptions in government systems.

Given that a backlog and slowdown in the processing of passport applications, across all service centres nationwide, causing delays in passports issuance, is a recurrent problem, government needs to take drastic steps in cutting down the down time, change the ID printer vendor if need be. A professional government systems analyst should be able to select the best vendor or service provider for a more reliable ID printing system, taking into consideration experience, expertise, customer service and support.

Government needs to engage suppliers who understand the volume and demand for IDs and passports as to provide prompt aftersales services in case of disruptions. Such disruptions should not add salt to the wound at Home Affairs. The ministry has suffered enough, from allegations of corruption to fraudulent production of passports. Fixable problems should be resolved quickly.
