POSTAL SERVICES PLAY ESSENTIAL ROLE
Sir,
Postal services have played a major role in our lives over the past decades, but there is no doubt that they now face serious challenges.
Some of the challenges are based on the technological advancements that are global in nature. Many people can attest to how postal services have helped them in distance learning and companies were able to send bills to their customers. A post office is a public facility and a retailer that provides mail services, such as accepting letters and parcels, providing post office boxes, and selling postage stamps, packaging, and stationery.Among the many challenges that post offices face is that the service has lost most of its overnight and parcel delivery business to the private sector, which has led to increased postage rates and further reductions in postal services
Post offices are also affected by regulatory challenges such as changes in government regulations and international trade agreements. These regulations can impact the cost of operations, the delivery of mail and the overall efficiency of the postal service. However, the internet has changed things around. I am happy that our Eswatini Posts and Telecommunications Corporations (EPTC) has continued to exist despite these challenges. Our postal services must be well-equipped to match the private sector pound-for-pound. It must be able to match the services offered by DHL, Alibaba or other courier services.
Route
If there is a need for the EPTC to take the unbundling route, just to ensure that postal services remain strong, that route must be taken. Princess Sikhanyiso started this move when she was minister of Information, Communication and Technology, but I think those that came after her did not share the same vision.Whatever the case, we need postal services to exist for many years from now. Some newspapers and magazines have relied solely on the existence of postal services to deliver copies to their readers.
Relief
This was relief for these newspapers and magazines to concentrate on the quality of their product, without worrying about the circulation of the product. Postal services must also be allowed to innovate, such as supplying stationery to schools, as was the case before. This will help these post offices to remain afloat.
