DRUGS SHORTAGE CRISIS

Font size: Decrease font Enlarge font

Sir,

I am writing to bring attention to an urgent issue affecting public healthcare in Eswatini - the ongoing shortage of essential drugs in hospitals. This critical situation is placing immense strain on both healthcare workers and patients, with reports emerging from various health facilities that many are being forced to turn away patients or delay treatments due to the lack of basic medications.

This shortage is particularly alarming as it affects life-saving medications, including those for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. Patients are being asked to purchase their own drugs from private pharmacies, a burden that many cannot afford. Additionally, there are growing concerns about the impact this crisis is having on maternal and child health services, as hospitals struggle to provide adequate care.

We must investigate and explore the root causes of this shortage, including supply chain issues, budget constraints, and possible mismanagement of resources. It would also be important to highlight the voices of patients and healthcare workers who are directly affected, as well as seeking comments from relevant authorities in the Ministry of Health. This is not only timely but crucial in holding decision-makers accountable and shedding light on a problem that could have dire consequences for the nation’s health if left unaddressed.
