WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS, ASK FOR SUGAR
Sir,
“When life gives you lemons, make grape juice then sit back and watch the world ask you how you did it,” once said Toni Truax. Humour as they say, is the best medicine and a healthy mind is a healthy body. You know I have found these past few weeks very challenging. However, after jogging my memory, I realised that challenges are exactly what make us thrive. In particular, I took heed to the transformation of a caterpillar into a butterfly. George Cain said: ‘The caterpillar does all the work but the butterfly gets all the publicity’, which in a way is true depending on how you look at it. What’s most intriguing though is that no other animal – not even human beings – changes from one being to another.
Transformation
If you look closely, a caterpillar eats the bitter, ill-tasting leaves, makes the cocoon and does the sleeping. Then the amazing thing is, once all transformation is done, the caterpillar comes out to eat sweet nectar. Here’s what’s even more incredible; you cannot really say it’s unfair to the caterpillar because in the end, it’s one form, or is it? Here’s what someone says: ‘Do something today that your future self will thank you for’. So, before you throw in the towel, think of yourself 20 or 30 years from now, saying: “If all the hard work and tears I went through then have made me what I am now, then surely I can do more for my future self again.” I guess it’s important to then consider that whatever struggles you go through are for the better and that sometimes it takes defeat to become a winner.
Direction
Look, there is no easy path to your dreams and whatever direction you take is totally up to you. The important thing is for the ladder to be leaning against the right wall. Along the way, you will find a lot of detractors, people who will pull you down and try to make you or your efforts inferior; like you do not matter but then haters make you stronger, don’t they?
Coming to the caterpillar, consider that sometimes the blood, sweat and tears will not be mentioned until you come out on the other side beautiful and striking like the butterfly. Wait for no man, for time does the same.
Work
Once you become a butterfly, not only is your hard work admirable but it allows you to soar as well. Enjoy what you have made and take it and let it be a reminder of your path to get there. Do not look back with resent but do it with pride. Get on out there and keep in mind that the time you take to reflect on all the hard work you did, will all be worthwhile. Much like a caterpillar takes the time to make a cocoon, so should you, to get in touch with your spiritual self – pray, meditate and formulate a plan to dwell in your successes. Realise that the work you put in is just a drop in the ocean of the potential you are and keep your head up always. At the end of the day, you are amazing. When life gives you lemons, ask it for sugar and water too. Otherwise your final product would be some acidic lemon juice, said Priyavrat Gupta.
